More Than a Salon: A Legacy of Craft, Care, and Community
Every salon has scissors and chairs. What makes Appearances different is our story—a legacy rooted in family, forged through mentorship, and carried forward with purpose. Founded by Bernard Koch Jr., a second-generation barber and community staple, Appearances is more than a business. It’s a commitment to growth, excellence, and connection.

The Meaning Behind the Logo
Designed in 1996 by Eldon Stromberg, our logo is a visual story. The square nods to our roots (my dad’s first salon opened in 1932). The cursive script reflects personal care, and the rising, bold lines symbolize the confidence we hope every client feels walking out our door.
Appearances has always been about people—those who taught us, those we’ve taught, and those we serve. What started with one father and son became a shared dream, carried forward by every stylist who’s ever stood behind a chair here. We’re not just in the business of hair—we’re in the business of helping people look and feel like their best selves. And that legacy continues, one beautiful appearance at a time.
