At Appearances, we take pride in a strong foundation built on the tradition of Bernie Koch Sr. During Bernie’s 68-year career, he successfully and innovatively traversed the modern history of hair design. In doing so, Bernie gained tremendous respect from his clientele, employees and the Springfield community.

Bernie’s clients went to him when they needed to feel and look special, perhaps before an important event. They could count on being the focus of his professional and personal attention. Bernie was the first hairstylist in the area to offer appointments for his busy clients. He was the first salon in town to offer air conditioning. He invented equipment that is still used today. He even regularly visited hospitals and homes to service clients who were ill.

Bernie’s son, Bernie Jr., opened Appearances in 1984 with his father’s above-and-beyond approach to service, and his commitment to style and technique. “We enjoy our work and are constantly working to keep up with new trends and techniques. We are career-long students,” Bernie Jr. said.

Bernie Jr.’s 40 years of experience in the industry has made him one of the most popular and coveted hairstylists in the Springfield area. While he is proud of the head-turning styles he creates, more important to Bernie is how he makes his clients feel.
